Bloomsday
Culture & Technology | âAuthor:
John Matthew Barlow Yesterday was Bloomsday, the annual marking of the fictional tour of Dublin undertaken by Leopold Bloom in James Joyce's 1922 novel, Ulysses. Each 16 June around the world, Joyce fans undertake Bloomdsay celebrations. In Dublin, Bloom's walk around the city is re-created. In the cities of the Irish diaspora, more esoteric re-creations of Bloom's tour are undertaken, as well as various Irish street festivals. Bloomsday celebrations are globalised these days: Toronto, Philadelphia, Trieste (where Joyce wrote Ulysses), Tokyo, and Szombathely, Hungary. Szombathely was the fictional birthplace of Bloom's father, Virâg Rudolf.
